7 things you will learn about yourself during your internship

Internships can help you learn about your career options and also about yourself!

Overview

During your international internship you will learn many new things, including knowledge of the role you are interning for, the way in which workplaces work, cultural differences between your country and the country you intern in, and of course a range of skills necessary for you do well in your role.

Your internship is as much about learning new skills as it is learning things about yourself. You can expect to learn these 7 things about yourself during your internship abroad:

  1. Your determination is unlimited

You will learn just how determined you can be and how that can lead to you achieving and accomplishing incredible things. It’s a bit of a cliché, but it’s very true ‘you can achieve anything that you set your mind to’.

  1. You matter

During your internship you might have moments of doubt, where you doubt your own importance; maybe your manager has you doing some task that feels meaningless and below your abilities, however this will teach you a valuable lesson that you are important! All workplaces need teamwork and you are part of the team.

  1. You don’t need to be afraid to ask questions

No question is stupid. Whilst you are completing your internship, you’ll be faced with situations where you will have to ask questions about a certain task that you aren’t sure about. The more you ask, the more confident you will become.

  1. You’re way more prepared than you know

You might have been worrying about your internship before you started, with nagging thoughts like “I won’t know how to do anything” or “I’m not prepared or ready for my internship”. However, these are irrelevant worries because you already have an amazing skill set; you just need to learn how to utilise your transferrable skills to the best of your ability.

  1. Your interests

During your international internship, you will learn about your own interests, e.g. what you like and what you don’t like. Maybe the job you thought you wanted isn’t quite what you expected and so you know not to pursue that career path. Or maybe there was an aspect of the internship role that you really liked and some parts you didn’t like. Learning about yourself is a vital part of growing up, so don’t feel ashamed if you don’t or do like something you didn’t expect.

  1. You can be fiercely independent

Up until now you may have always had guidance; whilst at school or college, your teachers and parents might have told you what to do, how to do it, when to do it, etc. but during your internship you will learn that you are actually very independent and that you can use your own initiative.

  1. Your place in the world

International travel can always illuminate the fact that there is a whole world outside of your city/town and country. Internships can help to show you this very well because you are working as well as experiencing a new culture. Your internship is an opportunity for you to learn that you may not fit in everywhere, but there will be somewhere that is the perfect fir for you!
