Day trips from Valencia: One day in Alicante

Here's how to spend one day in Alicante, from two of our Turing Scheme interns in Valencia.

Overview

Valencia is a huge city with no shortage of things to do, but sometimes you want a change of scenery. This well-connected city makes it super easy to travel from one place to another. Our interns spent the day exploring Alicante, which you can watch on our Instagram page here.

Early Start🌄

To get the most out of a day trip, it’s best to book an early morning train. For our interns, their day began at 5am! The Renfe train from Valencia to Alicante took around 2.5 hours, costing €33 each for a return ticket. Don’t forget to pack your headphones and some snacks to keep you going. Once you're off the train, it’s a great time to visit El Mercado Central and grab a coffee to start your day.

Bring Your Walking Shoes! 🏰

To get the best view of the city, you need to visit Castillo de Santa Bárbara. The upwards hike, beginning at Parc de l'Ereta, takes around 40 minutes, but there are plenty of places to stop and catch your breath. Don’t worry, though - you can still get to the castle without doing the hike! A lift is accessible from Avenida Juan Bautista Lafora, opposite La Playa de Postiguet, for €2.70.

The entire site is huge and there is so much to explore, with plenty of unique viewpoints. Once you reach the castle, there are places to sit down and have something to eat or drink. Our interns arrived at the perfect time when there were musicians playing the violin inside the castle.

Museums 🖼️

After you’ve hiked back down to Parc de l’Ereta, the MACA art gallery (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante) is only a short walk away. Their current exhibition features the kinetic art of Spanish sculptor and artist Eusebio Sempere. However, there is also artwork from other artists, including Picasso.

Just outside of MACA, you can see the Basilica de Santa Maria d’Alacant, a Gothic church from the 1500s. Not far from here, the Gravina Museum of Fine Arts (MUBAG) showcases even more Spanish art. Better still, it’s located in a palace!

Time to Refuel 🥘

There are plenty of reasonably priced restaurants close to this area. If you venture further into the city, you can find places like D’Tablas, which offers tapas for as cheap as €1.50!

Explore the City 🏙️

After lunch, it’s the perfect time to explore the city centre. As you wander through the main areas, you’ll find mushroom sculptures dotted along Calle de las Setas, which are popular with tourists. You can also walk along La Explanada de España, a colourful beachside promenade which often hosts various souvenir markets.

After you look at the markets, you can head towards La Playa de Postiguet, the local beach. In comparison to Valencia, this beach tends to become crowded much more quickly, so it might be hard to find a spot later in the day.

Stop For a Sweet Treat 🥐

As a final pit stop, our interns visited Mon Sucrée on Calle de Ángel Lozano for some pastry and macarons, before heading back to the train station.
