Valencia 101: Cheap things to do in Valencia

Sometimes you just want to do something cheap and cheerful. Here are some affordable places to go during your internship in Valencia!

Overview

Moving to another country can involve a lot of spending. Sometimes you just want to do something that won’t break the bank. Being an intern is a fantastic opportunity to learn how to work with a budget and still get the most out of your stay here!

Free Activities in Valencia

There are plenty of places in Valencia which are free to visit. Apps like Meetup and Facebook show what’s going on in the city, from workouts in the park to salsa lessons and language exchanges.

Walking Tours

FreeTour offers guided walking tours through the city for (you guessed it) free! These tours are typically two hours long and mostly spoken in English. It's a great chance for you to learn more about the city and ask a local about the best places to go in Valencia. Although the tour is free, most people tip at the end, since the guides are very knowledgeable and give you lots of exciting information.

Beaches and Parks

The beaches in Valencia offer stunning views. The wide pavements mean that it’s easy to go for a walk, stroll, or even a bike ride using Valenbisi bikes. There is always so much to do on the beach. You can find vendors on the side of the beach selling corn, or you may even see someone playing the keyboard! Groups on Instagram and Facebook sometimes arrange meetups on the beach, so it’s worth looking online. Who knows, you might make new friends here! Also, the sunrise over the beach in Valencia is breathtaking. It makes waking up at 6am worthwhile!

Similarly, Turia Park offers lots of entertainment. Once a riverbed, Turia Park connects the city from Cabecera Park to the City of Arts and Sciences. With over 9km of walkable space, you can find people dancing, running, and cycling in the park. Located in the heart of the city, it’s the perfect place to bring your friends and have a picnic.

Arts and Culture

There are plenty of free museums and galleries you can visit in Valencia. For example, the Center del Carme Contemporary Culture (CCCC) is a fantastic cultural hub located in the vibrant area of Barrio Del Carmen. The gallery, open every day except Monday, is free to enter and has various exhibitions to interact with.

Another area to visit if you’re interested in art would be El Cabanyal. Located by the coast, there is plenty of artwork and graffiti on the walls by different artists in the city. After you’ve been around the artwork, why not stop at Los Olivares for their signature €0.80 churros and chocolate dipping sauce?

For anyone interested in literature, Club Hemingway hosts a monthly open mic night for English-speaking writers. The room fills up with writers from New York to Berlin, and everyone gets the chance to share their writing in a warm and friendly environment. It takes place at Radio City, a cosy live music venue which hosts various events throughout the month, including jazz and flamenco nights.

Cheap Activities in Valencia

Here are some activities which are low cost but great value for money.

Flea Markets

Flea markets are located far and wide in Valencia, taking place on different days across the city. The 1-euro market is especially popular because you can find a wide range of clothing, accessories, and books for only €1. It costs 1 to enter, but there is so much to look through. Many of the markets in Valencia also have stalls ranging from 1-5. You can find some great bargains at the flea markets, which our interns soon discovered!

L’Albufera

Albufera is the place where paella first originated. You can take the 25 bus to Albufera from the city, which is affordable if you already have a travel card, or the 24 bus to El Palmar, the nearby village where rice is grown. For a further 5 euros, and to get the full experience, you can take a boat from El Palmar to Albufera.

Excursions

Tour providers like Happy Erasmus and Valencia Language Exchange offer various excursions throughout the week, from Montanejos and Isla Tabarca to Alicante! These trips usually start from €25, which is little bit pricier, but includes private transport, a tour guide, and insurance. You can even get a €2 discount on the VLE.

No matter your budget, you can find so much to do in Valencia for so little. From free walking tours to €1 flea markets and 80 cent churros, it's easy to plan a full day out and make the most of Valencia!
