What should you wear for your internship interview?

Your internship interview is very important, so nail your first impression with this guide of what to wear.

Overview

During your internship you want to make a good impression, so that you can get a good reference from your employer. But how do you do that? It’s not all in your appearance, of course it isn’t; you have to be right for the role and hardworking, but dressing well is a factor of how people see you.

First impressions are very important

Never underestimate how important first impressions are and the very first impression anyone will ever have of you is what you look like. Before you even speak, your internship employer will be able to make an assessment of you because of what you are wearing.

Susan Bixler, author of The New Professional Image: From Business Casual to the Ultimate Power Look, said “Books are judged by their covers, houses are appraised by their curb appeal, and people are initially evaluated on how they choose to dress and behave.”

Smart clothes for the interview

You may have heard it a thousand times before, but smart clothes are very important when you are presenting yourself for the first time, whether it is to an interviewer or to your internship employer. You must wear smart clothes, or smart casual ones, but what does this mean?

If you are a woman to could wear a smart blouse/shirt with black trousers or a skirt and top the look off with a blazer. Alternatively, you could wear a smart dress. If you are a man, you could wear a smart suit, or just a pair of smart trousers and a shirt.

Remember that it is important that you feel comfortable with whatever you choose to wear, because that confidence will help you feel more able to interview or less nervous about the first day of your internship.

During your interview, take a look around the office or workplace to check out what other people are wearing. You can also ask your interviewer, during the interview, what clothing you will be expected to wear if you work there.

The greatest thing you can ever wear is a smile!

Make sure you don’t forget about all of your appearance, smiling and making eye contact is very important because it will show that you are friendly and welcoming. Even if you are extremely nervous, smiling can also help you to relax more.
